Does fastener manufacturing in Russia have a future?
The author analyzes the state of the Russian fastener industry, noting underutilized production capacity amidst rising imports from China and a lack of growth drivers. Positive developments are highlighted, such as the launch of production for mechanical and chemical anchors, fasteners for timber structures, plastic components, and zinc-flake coatings. The article emphasizes the need for industry consolidation, the creation of an expert community, and the monitoring of foreign technologies.

Quality of protective coatings. What to monitor and how? Part 1: Coating thickness
The first part of this article series examines the mandatory control parameters for the four dominant types of zinc coatings – electro-galvanized, zinc-flake, thermal diffusion, and hot-dip galvanized. It demonstrates that thickness is the key characteristic determining both the barrier and sacrificial protection of the steel surface. Relevant standards, permissible thickness ranges, and corresponding corrosion resistance levels are presented. Non-destructive and destructive thickness measurement methods are categorized, with an assessment of their margins of error and applicability to each coating type. Laboratory, intermediate, and in-process control methods are highlighted separately. The article notes that the choice of method depends on inspection objectives and the enterprise's resources, while a combination of laboratory and in-process control ensures the coating meets technical standards and product tolerances.
Problems with threaded connections and materials for their solution
The article outlines the primary causes of threaded connection failures. It highlights the limitations of traditional solutions – such as anti-seize pastes, electro-galvanized coatings, stainless steels, and zinc-flake coatings – when subjected to aggressive environments, high temperatures, and repeated assembly/disassembly cycles. Anti-friction solid-lubricant coatings are proposed as a means to stabilize the friction coefficient and provide corrosion protection, with examples drawn from both Russian and international materials. Such coatings are economically justified in extreme operating conditions, situations involving frequent disassembly, or scenarios where maintenance is inaccessible – cases where the cost of fastener failure vastly outweighs the expense of applying the coating.
Multi-story timber buildings: a vast array of unresolved questions
An interview with Maxim Kokhov, CEO of Eurocode 5 LLC, prompted a response from Semyon Goglev and Vladimir Stoyanov – experts from the Wooden Housing Construction Association. They view the adoption of the SP 549.1311500.2026 code of practice as a significant milestone but emphasize that the regulatory and scientific support for the sector is only just beginning. The experts note that previous documents – including an organizational standard for CLT panels limited to four stories – had restricted status and were tied to specific manufacturers, whereas the new document paves the way for standardized design across all companies. Stoyanov highlights unresolved issues regarding timber facades and electrical systems, as well as the need for further testing and the development of supplementary documentation.
The Chinese fastener market
An editorial review of Chinese industry sources presents data on the production, domestic demand, and export of fasteners, including trade with Russia. China retains its status as the largest producer, with an output exceeding 9.5 million tonnes; however, the industry's structure is characterized by a surplus of basic products and a shortage of high-strength fasteners. Domestic demand is shifting from the construction sector toward electric vehicles and renewable energy, driving a transition toward a higher-quality production model. China’s fastener exports reached $10.04 billion in 2025; the US remains the largest buyer, while Russia ranks third.
Reliable hose fastening
In an interview Semyon Liberman, founder of the company "Mir Khomutov" (World of Clamps), answers questions regarding the selection and application of hose clamps. The discussion covers how to select clamps based on hose material, elasticity, and reinforcement, as well as differing fastening approaches in the US, Europe, and Russia. It explains why uniform compression is unattainable. The article addresses the issue of over-tightening, cites the example of a clamp with a break-off head from NORMA Group, and illustrates the link between excessive tightening torque and micro-tears or material aging. Recommendations are provided for both gardening and industrial applications, taking into account temperature, vibration, and aggressive environments.
The human factor as a barrier to development and a cause of accidents
This article examines the underlying socio-psychological factors that hinder the modernization and innovative development of Russian enterprises. It demonstrates that a preference for opaque management decisions and a lack of personal accountability lead to a deficit in work motivation, reduced attention spans, and an increased risk of errors at all stages of production. Examples of major accidents are cited. The author emphasizes that technological modernization is outpacing changes in organizational culture, and the cost of outdated psychological mindsets is unacceptably high. The article concludes that it is necessary to restructure organizational culture and implement a supportive behavioral model.

Which standard should be used for calculating dowel connections?
This review examines the inconsistencies between current Russian codes of practice – SP 260.13330.2023 and SP 294.13330.2017 – regarding the calculation of dowel connections under tension. It presents data from tests on 25 series of Hilti nail-in dowel fasteners (used on steel substrates 3–6 mm thick to attach elements 0.5–3.0 mm thick) and compares the results with calculations based on Russian, European, and American standards. The study found that shank failure never occurred and that SP 294.13330.2017 provides the most accurate methodology within its scope of application. The article concludes by highlighting the need to harmonize Russian standards and suggesting that the scope of SP 294.13330.2017 could be expanded to include thin-sheet elements (starting from 0.8 mm) used in roofing and facade systems.
